Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter Review
Trader Joe’s cookie butter jar says: A deliciously unusual spread reminiscent of gingerbread and made with crushed biscuits. How very continental of you, Trader Joe’s.
Or, as I call it, frosting in a jar.
Trader Joe’s pushed this hard when it first came out, but they didn’t need to; it was flying off the shelves.
Sorry to say that I don’t like it as much as some. It tastes somewhat like ginger snaps, but not as sharp or spicy. It doesn’t burn your tongue. Tastes sweet and creamy, but I can taste the oil, which is a turnoff.
The other thing to consider is, what to put it on? Trader Joe’s suggests:
Spread it on toast, bagels, pancakes or waffles. Use it as a dip for hunks of dark chocolate or pretzels or (gasp!) veggies like carrots or celery.
Really? Do you put sugar or syrup on your vegetables? It’s not peanut butter, which has a more uncooked ashy taste. It’s sugar and spice. This does not mix well with vegetables.
I’m sure the spread would work on toast, but like many reviews said., I ended up eating it straight out of the jar. It’s a good pick me up if you’re in a hurry (although so is a Hershey’s Chocolate Bar with Almonds, which would have a little protein. I’m just sayin’.). It’s just sort of…uncouth to scoop something out of a jar and then tell yourself it’s something decadent. It’s low-rent. 🙂 I never finished the jar, but still felt I got my money’s worth, so that’s good.
If there’s no Trader Joe’s near you, you can also buy it on Amazon. (Good deal – it’s a 2 pack.)
What Others Say About Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter (Amazon)
One Amazon reviewer calls it “crack in a jar.” Eww.
I came across cookie butter at a restaurant, where they made an expert dessert or cookie butter fried wantons and ice cream. I bought this to make them and ended up just spooning it out of the jar. It tastes just like Teddy Grams!
i dont really but food only BUT omg ! it came so fast than i expected and i lives all the way to Hawaii. Donr have to go to the mainland and buy this. I RECOMMEND THIS
I only report ’em, folks.
Ingredients: Wheat flour, candy sugar, 4 kinds of oil (!), water and emulsifier. I usually stop at the top 5, but have to add, this has 2 additional kinds of sugar: [plain] sugar, and sugar syrup, so watch out!
Oddly enough, no ginger. Not very nutritious!

I’ve never bought it again. But it wouldn’t make a bad pantry staple, for the next earthquake.
